He also became the first Nigerian to score in two FIFA World Cup competitions, after scoring twice against Iceland in the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. In November 2021, he surpassed Joseph Yobo's and Vincent Enyeama's joint record of 101 appearances to become Nigeria's most-capped player. He currently has 107 international appearances.
