 Over 600 inmates escape from Kuje prison

Over 600 prisoners reportedly escaped the jails after they came under attack late on Tuesday night, according to Dr. Shuaib Belgore, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.

Belgore claimed that Boko Haram terrorists, who came expressly for their members being held in jail, were responsible for the attack.

However, he claimed that while 300 were still at large, about 300 had been recaptured.

He added that a member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps was killed during the incident while speaking to journalists.

There have been a number of attacks on our facilities, the majority of which have been thwarted, but occasionally one has been successful, he said. With heavy explosives, they arrived in this one with great determination.

"After the original infiltration effort failed, they used stronger grade explosives to strike a different portion of the wall, which succeeded in bringing down the wall.

The forces on the ground made every effort to fend them off, but due to their sheer numbers, they were unable to do so. Unfortunately, despite their valiant efforts, the breach occurred. When they were halfway through, reinforcements arrived. They were ultimately turned away.

"At the moment they entered, they killed one NSCDC agent in an effort to stabilize the situation. There are 994 prisoners here.

We am aware that these are Boko Haram terrorists who come to hunt down their collaborators. We have currently located roughly 300 of the approximately 600 inmates who escaped the jail; some of them were found hiding in the bushes.
