Man United contact Napoli for Osimhen

Victor Osimhen

Manchester United, who is undergoing a significant reconstruction and is in urgent need of a goal scorer, is reportedly interested in signing Napoli striker Victor Osimhen this summer.

The Red Devils have gotten in touch with the Partonopei, according to Corriere dello Sport (via thefaithfulmufc), to talk about a potential transfer for the Nigerian forward. Under the leadership of new manager Erik ten Hag, United are considering a new strategy this summer after a poor 2021/22 season.

In 38 Premier League games last season, the 13-time league champions only managed to score 57 goals. Cristiano Ronaldo, 37, was the team's most impressive forward with 18 goals in 30 games, but his teammates didn't support the five-time Ballon d'Or winner. Only nine league goals were scored by Edinson Cavani, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford combined.

In addition, the club intends to let go of Cavani, Jesse Lingard, and Juan Mata when their contracts expire at the end of the month. Therefore, it is anticipated that they would give priority to signing a top-tier forward.

It's possible that Victor Osimhen, who transferred from Lille to Napoli in the summer of 2020 for a club-record amount of €70 million, may be the answer to their prayers and the assistance that Ronaldo needs as he ages.

Other elite English clubs like Arsenal and Newcastle are also keeping an eye on the striker, who scored 18 goals and contributed six assists in 32 games played last season.

Osimhen, who has been called "phenomenal" for earlier efforts, has already tallied 15 goals and 8 assists in just 23 games for Nigeria. In the second game of the matchday two of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification match, he scored four goals as the Super Eagles defeated Sao Tome & Principe 10-0.

At the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, the Eagles defeated Sierra Leone 2-1 after coming back from a goal down on matchday one.

President of the Italian side Aurelie De Laurentiis is reputed to be a strong negotiator and is said to be unwilling to consider selling Osimhen for less than £86m.
